Berne/Stralsund, 4 December 2025 – The Fassmer Group is expanding its production capacities and establishing a new site in Stralsund. The company has leased facilities on the premises of the Volkswerft from the Hanseatic City of Stralsund. Operations are scheduled to begin in early 2026 with the construction of the new fisheries research vessel WALTHER HERWIG.

By setting up operations in Stralsund, Fassmer is strengthening its presence on the Baltic Sea while revitalizing the historic Volkswerft site. The region will regain an active maritime industry location – creating prospects for employment, value creation and regional cooperation.

Fassmer’s move into Stralsund marks the beginning of a strategic expansion. It reduces dependence on foreign supply chains, retains expertise within the country and contributes to the Federal Government’s security policy resilience.

"With our commitment in Stralsund, we aim to expand production capacities, optimize processes and make a long-term contribution to the development of Germany’s maritime industry. Our goal is to establish a permanent presence in the region and make Stralsund a key part of our shipyard network," says Jan Oskar Henkel, Managing Director of Fr. Fassmer GmbH & Co. KG.

Alexander Badrow, mayor of Stralsund, welcomes the development: "This is great news for the people of Stralsund just in time for Christmas: I’m delighted that Fassmer, a highly capable shipbuilder, has recognized the site’s potential and leased the large Hall 290 from the Hanseatic City. A warm welcome to the Volkswerft family!"

The first project at the new site will be the construction of the WALTHER HERWIG, commissioned by the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE). The vessel is intended for fisheries research and will replace the current research vessel WALTHER HERWIG III. It will meet the latest scientific, technical and environmental standards – contributing to technological sovereignty and preserving maritime expertise in Germany.

The Stralsund site offers a range of advantages: production work can be carried out in modern halls regardless of weather conditions; proximity to suppliers facilitates coordination; and collaboration with regional partners will be sustainably expanded.

In the long term, Fassmer plans to carry out additional newbuild and outfitting projects at the Stralsund site. Further uses – including maintenance, repair and hull construction – are also being considered.
