Fassmer with new Joint Venture in Taiwan

Berne, 09 October 2020Together with the Taiwanese company Atech Composites, an affiliate of the Horizon Group, Fassmer established the joint venture FACT – Fassmer Atech Composites Taiwan Co., Ltd. The composites manufacturer Atech and Fassmer’s wind power division will build nacelle and spinner covers in Kaohsiung City in Taiwan for the growing wind energy sector of the country. A first contract for the Taiwanese market was already signed with MHI Vestas Offshore Wind.

The MHI Vestas order comprises nearly one hundred V174-9.5 MW turbines for three offshore wind farms in Taiwan. The V174 is the manufacturer’s newest wind turbine platform. One V174-9.5 MW turbine supplies up to 9,000 homes with electricity per year. The production of the first nacelle and spinner covers for MHI Vestas will start this fall in Berne, Germany. The series production follows in the second quarter of 2021 in Taiwan.

As an expert for series production of composites Fassmer builds components for the European wind energy sector since 1998. Atech is specialized in custom-made composites building elements for the yachts of the Horizon Group as well as individual solutions for other industries. The new partnership combines the strengths of both companies for the increasing demands for offshore wind energy in Taiwan. Atech, which has a comprehensive network in Taiwan, supplies the staff and the production sites. Fassmer contributes the expertise regarding series production as well as wind power and offshore industries.

After the decision of the Taiwanese government to chase out nuclear power until 2025 the national energy sector is undergoing a transformation. Therefore, Taiwan is increasingly becoming a central market for offshore wind energy with capacities growing up to 5,500 megawatt in the next five years.
